Adafruit STHS34PF80 IR Presence / Motion Sensor is a digital infrared sensing breakout designed for presence and motion detection without the bulky Fresnel lens used on many traditional PIR modules. Based on the STMicroelectronics STHS34PF80, it can detect IR activity from objects such as people at distances of up to 4 meters, making it a practical choice for compact enclosures, smart lighting, automation, and interactive projects.
Unlike simple PIR sensors that usually give only a binary trigger, this board communicates over I2C and provides richer sensor data. You can read how much IR is being detected, check for presence and motion events, monitor temperature-related changes, and access ambient and object temperature values through supported software libraries.
The breakout is built for quick integration with maker and embedded platforms. It includes an onboard 3.3V regulator and level shifting, so it works with both 3V and 5V logic systems. Dual STEMMA QT connectors make solderless hookup and daisy-chaining easy, and they are also compatible with SparkFun Qwiic I2C cables. QT cable is not included.

Main pins exposed on the breakout for power and I2C communication.
| Pin | Name | Function |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | VIN | Power input, accepts 3V or 5V |
| 2 | 3Vo | Regulated 3.3V output from onboard regulator, up to 100mA available |
| 3 | GND | Common ground for power and logic |
| 4 | SCL | I2C clock line |
| 5 | SDA | I2C data line |
| 6 | INT | Interrupt output, configurable in software over I2C |
For a 5V board such as an Arduino Uno or Adafruit Metro, connect 5V to VIN. For a 3V board such as a Feather or Raspberry Pi class device, connect 3V to VIN. Then connect GND, SCL, and SDA as usual for I2C.
The built-in STEMMA QT connectors allow quick plug-and-play wiring to compatible boards and accessories, but a QT cable is not included.
It detects infrared activity for presence and motion sensing, and it can also report temperature-related changes over I2C. Compared with basic PIR modules, it provides richer digital data instead of only a simple trigger output.
The breakout is specified for detection up to 4 meters without requiring a lens. The sensor has an 80° field of view.
Yes. The board includes an onboard 3.3V regulator and level shifting, so it can be powered from 3V or 5V VIN and used with both 3V and 5V logic systems.
It uses I2C for communication, with SDA and SCL pins or the onboard STEMMA QT connectors. The STEMMA QT ports are also compatible with SparkFun Qwiic I2C cables for solderless hookup and daisy-chaining.
The default I2C address is 0x5A.
No. The breakout has dual STEMMA QT connectors, but the QT cable is not included.
