Adafruit Wiz5500 Ethernet Co-Processor Breakout Board makes it easy to add reliable wired networking to your microcontroller project. Plug in a standard Ethernet cable, connect the board over SPI, and use supported Arduino or CircuitPython libraries to bring your project online without dealing with Wi-Fi credentials or RF setup.
The breakout is built around the WIZ5500 Ethernet controller, which communicates with your host MCU using SPI plus a single CS pin. Adafruit includes the support circuitry needed for use with 3V or 5V microcontrollers, with level shifting already handled on-board, so it can be wired to a wide range of development boards and custom designs.
The RJ45 connector includes link and activity indicators so you can quickly check network status at a glance. Libraries for Arduino and CircuitPython support DHCP setup, helping you get connected within seconds in typical applications.
Power the board through VIN, and match that supply to your microcontroller logic level: use 3V with 3V boards and 5V with 5V boards. The breakout also provides a 3.3V regulator output that can supply up to 100mA, along with a common GND connection.
For a typical SPI connection, wire SCK, MISO, MOSI and CS between your microcontroller and the breakout. Example Arduino-style wiring uses D13 for SCK, D12 for MISO, D11 for MOSI and D10 for CS on an Uno/Metro-type board.
| Pin | Function |
|---|---|
| VIN | Board power input; connect to the same logic-level supply as the MCU |
| 3.3V | Regulated 3.3V output, up to 100mA available |
| GND | Common ground for power and logic |
| SCK | SPI clock input |
| MISO | SPI data from breakout to microcontroller |
| MOSI | SPI data from microcontroller to breakout |
| CS | SPI chip select |
| RST | Reset input; hold low for at least 500 microseconds to reset |
| IRQ | Interrupt output, active low |
Assembly required: the included header must be soldered to the board before use.
It is designed for use with both 3V and 5V microcontrollers, with on-board level shifting already included. The board connects over SPI, so you can use it with many Arduino-, CircuitPython-, and other SPI-capable microcontroller projects.
The WIZ5500 communicates over SPI using SCK, MISO, MOSI, and a single CS pin. The breakout also has VIN and GND power connections, plus RST and IRQ pins if your project needs reset or interrupt control.

Yes. Adafruit specifies support for the Ethernet Arduino library as well as CircuitPython using the Adafruit_CircuitPython_Wiznet5k library, with DHCP setup available through the supported libraries.
No, this breakout does not have built-in PoE support. Adafruit notes that PoE can be added externally with a PoE splitter.
Each order includes one assembled and tested breakout board plus some header. The header is not pre-soldered, so a small amount of soldering is required before use.
