Overview
The Adafruit SPI Non-Volatile FRAM Breakout – 2 Mbit / 256 KBytes – MB85RS2MTA is built around Fujitsu’s MB85RS2MTA, a high-end SPI FRAM chip that combines the speed of SRAM with true non-volatile storage. Unlike EEPROM or Flash, this FRAM can be written virtually unlimited times with no write delays, making it ideal for fast data logging, configuration storage, and state saving where power loss is a concern.
This specific board gives you 256 KB of non-volatile memory over SPI, capable of operating at clock speeds up to 25 MHz, so reads and writes are essentially instantaneous from a microcontroller’s point of view. Data is retained for decades without power, and the chip supports 10¹²+ write cycles, eliminating wear-out issues common with Flash-based storage.
The breakout is 5V-safe and 3.3V-friendly, with level shifting and regulation handled on the board, so it works seamlessly with Arduino, Raspberry Pi, ESP32, STM32, and other SPI-based systems. If you need reliable, high-speed, non-volatile storage for frequent writes—sensor logs, counters, calibration data, or crash-safe state storage—this FRAM breakout is purpose-built for exactly that use case.
