Whatever platform you might be using, be it Arduino, be it raspberry pi, or any other platform, almost all of them use serial communication to talk to another devices. So here is a cable that has 4 wires to hook up serial communication port with a USB port which almost universal. These four wires are viz. red as power, black as ground, white as RX into USB port, and green as TX out of the USB port.
This cable also support for debug or login console for raspberry pi or beaglebone. Beside that the power cable and ground cable can be used for powering by using USB as usual. There is a little chip sitting right inside the big USB hub named as PL-2303HX a USB to Serial Bridge Controller. This chip is fully Compliant with USB Specification v2.0 (Full-Speed) .There is a on Chip USB 1.1 transceiver and 5V to 3.3V regulator as well since micro controllers work on most common 3.3V logic level.After connecting the pins properly you will require to install the Windows XP/Vista/7 or MacOS X PL2303HX drivers on your computer and connect with a terminal program at 115200 baud. Windows 8 is now supported! If you're using Windows 7 and you have issues, try this Prolific driver version 1.013. And if you're using an older version of Mac OS X (10.8-10.6) then try this Prolific driver version 1.5.1.
